Well planting time is just about here for our farm in Northwest Indiana and I’m excited. Like most farmers my favorite time is spring and/or fall when you get to go out in the field and really accomplish something you can see with your eyes. This year should prove to be even more exciting since I’ve started this blog and have been pretty active on twitter as I’m sure I’ll think of things to blog about and I plan on putting some videos up on my YouTube channel.
I doubt we are going to have the planting weather we did last year. We started putting down ammonia in early April and by 11:30pm April 30th planting was done. Dad told me that day was record for us, planting 275 acres in one day. Good thing too, because it rained the next day, and many of our neighbors didn’t get out into the fields until late May or even June. I was just positive we were going to have a huge crop but at the end of summer it just stayed hot and didn’t rain which hurt yields. Only time will tell what this year will bring.
Tomorrow we are going to finish putting on anhydrous ammonia fertlizer. Since we had a quick harvest and good weather we applied most of our fertilizer last fall. Just so happens it was quite a bit cheaper then too, so that worked out well. After that we are just going to be waiting on Mother Nature to catch up and get the soil warmed up. We are pretty much ready to go. All the tractors and equipment have been serviced, and we have the gooseneck trailer set up to handle fertilizer and seed. We are missing one thing. We haven’t gotten much seed in yet, but I’m sure it will be showing up any day now. Other than that, and the temperature, we are ready to roll.
So be watching for more things to come from me, as I’m sure I’ll be tweeting from the tractor seat!
