Farm Week in Pictures 09/20/2014

It’s transition into harvest week on the farm!  We got most of three early maturity soybean fields harvested.  I say most because summer ended in a rainy fashion, and there are some areas we just can’t drive the combine right now.  Another soaker came through Saturday night which will slow down our slow start a bit more. The coming week looks like 70s and sunny as fall begins.  Maybe by then we’ll be in full swing!

Soybean Harvest via thefarmerslife.comThe very first grain out of the combine for the 2014 fall harvest!  This field ended up producting 63 bushels per acre.  Very good!

Mud Tires via thefarmerslife.com13 of 71.5 acres had to be left in the next field.  The combine got messy enough squishing through the wet soil there.  No need to risk getting stuck and rutting up a no-till field.  Why did we go in at all?  Early harvest premium prices that disappear quickly at the elevator are worth the effort.

Soybean Pod via thefarmerslife.comOur double crop soybeans planted after July wheat harvest are coming along.  Hopefully they end up getting a decent yield and a good profit for the farm.  We’ve had good luck double cropping in the past.  If yields and prices are right getting both a wheat and bean crop off a field can be our most profitable acres.  No guarantees though.

Storm Front via thefarmerslife.comA short time after this photo was taken a large downpour put an end to our Saturday harvest.  We’ll see what next week brings to the farm as far as weather.  Dry soils and crops ready to pick are in short supply at the moment.

Come back next week!  I should have plenty more harvest to share, and maybe we’ll get some corn worked in too.
