Harvest continues on the farm, but it will be over before we know it. I’ve got a bunch of other ideas for posts, but it’s hard to get them done from the cab of the combine. When I’m at home I’ve been eating, sleeping, relaxing, and spending time with my wife and kid after putting in 10-12 hours days in the field. In the meantime please enjoy another round of harvest pictures!
This is the o-ring that replaced the o-ring that shut us down a couple weeks ago. We got shut down again earlier this week with the same problems. Combines don’t work when the hydraulic fluid is on the outside.

Turns out we may have wanted to check the popcorn a bit closer for pests. Some of it had enough earworms that they ended up inside the grain tank. Most of the popcorn was pretty dismal anyway due to the drought. We average about 4000lbs/acre. This year our fields made 3000, 1300, 1100, and 920.
These aren’t weeds. This is annual ryegrass growing as a cover crop. We are trying cover for the first time this year. For more info click the picture!

Drying corn takes heat! This fan blows hot air into the drying bin. I’ve got pictures and video of how we store grain coming in a future post.

This field could only muster just over 60 bushels to the acre of corn due to drought. That’s about 1/3 of our normal average yield across the farm.
We like our John Deere dealer, but I prefer we don’t see them in the field. He’s trying to figure out why that o-ring has failed us twice.
Thanks for all you do on those 12+ hour days to get your product from the field to production facilities for family to be able to use it. Love the pictures..

Ryegrass looks like it has a good start. Was it flown on? I like it mixed with crimson clover. Good to see more cover crops out there. That will take up a good deal of extra N.
Yes. Everything we did was flown on. This is our first shot with cover crops. I’m pretty excited about them. We have ryegrass and cereal side by side in two blocks in one field. We have 130 acres of oats and radishes in another. We also tried mixing a couple pounds of radish seed per acre in a test plot of our winter wheat.
