We’re already a week into April! Last year that meant we’d been planting corn for a week. Luckily things are somewhat normal this spring despite a cold March. We haven’t even looked at the planter yet, let alone hook a tractor to it. We’re pushing 70 this weekend and rain is in the forecast, and those are good things. If rain stays away I’ll expect some planters to roll this coming week, but for now take a look at what we’ve been up to!
Field Work Started!
Our John Deere 8420 pulling an anhydrous ammonia tank. I’ve been going around some of our corn fields and running a full rate of nitrogen on the perimeters before planting. We’ll sidedress (fertilize a growing corn crop) most of our N, but this will save some effort later in the season.
Obstacle Course
You find a few things in your way from time to time. I was able to manhandle this one out of the way.
Cool It
I noticed the front suspension on the 8420 was wet while driving to a field this week. Twice in the last two years this tractor has had the same fuel line fitting go bad so I thought we had another fuel issue. Luckily this was just antifreeze, and the leak seems to have been solved by just tightening a hose clamp. I rubbed some dirt on the tractor’s wet spots to dry them up and so I could see if the leak persisted from the cab. No more leaks yet!
Squeezed In
Here we have the 9320 and field cultivator, nearly unfolded, squeezed into the shop. We are working on installing some rolling baskets to help create a more level seed bed. I took this shot with Photosphere which is a new feature on my camera phone via a recent update. It’s kind of like a panoramic shot, but the phone is taking pictures in all directions and compiling them into one photo. I’m still experimenting to see what I can do with this new feature.
Keep on Rollin’
This is the start of our rolling basket installation. We are removing two out of five rows on our spike harrow to make room for these Remlinger baskets.
Loading…..
We sold 5 loads of waxy corn this week. Here’s one load getting ready to go!
Earning it’s Keep
4630 is running the auger that loaded all that corn.
Out with the Old in With the New
And as last year’s corn crop gets hauled away, this year’s crop gets hauled in. This is our first delivery of Pioneer seed this year. We still have soybeans on the way.
Brand New Bag
I received an unexpected package on the front porch. I got a little thanks from the lady who tweets for Pioneer. She appreciates all the farm pictures I post and sent along this pencil holder that looks like a seed bag and a couple of hats along with a nice note.
Two Can Play This Game
My farmer friend Chris hails from the drought stricken plains, and things aren’t getting much better in 2013. Since the rain clouds that come through his neck of the woods seem to part above his head he has taken to calling himself The New Moses. He also loves himself some red farm equipment so he decided to have to some fun with a picture I took of my John Deere green self celebrating returning to the field. Moses thought putting his meme in my weekly feature would be fun so here it is. Careful what you ask for, Moses. 😉
If you don’t know why that’s funny then you don’t know Sweet Brown!
What did you do this week?
Are you going to have your son pick up those sticks? 🙂
He would’ve been very excited about them if he were there!
Awsome page
Thanks!
