I’ve been taking pictures every Monday of a field of soybeans and a field of popcorn right near our shop. I started taking pictures at emergence and will continue to do so through harvest for a future blog post. I plan on having a slide show of each crop’s progress on a weekly basis so you can see all the different growth stages at the end of the season.
Beans finally started to grow in the last week. Seemed like they were stuck in place for a couple of weeks. Yes, the weeds are growing too. No need to remind me. Unfortunately it just keeps raining, and the fields aren’t drying out enough to get sprayers into the fields to take care of those weeds. Giant ragweed is starting to get fairly tall in some fields, and you can see grass is becoming an issue here.
The popcorn made quite a bit of progress in the last week. Weeds haven’t been as much of a problem as most of the corn is starting to canopy, blocking sunlight between the rows.
Here you can see how much the popcorn has filled in since last week. Hot weather really makes corn take off as long as we don’t have arid conditions. I take these pictures in the same two spots every week just so you know!
