We have been planting for one day and are officially ahead of schedule! How can this be with all the rain and cold temperatures we’ve been having? It depends on what year you are comparing this spring to.
I started farming full time exactly two years ago today, and on that day we had 80 acres planted.
Today we put right around 110 acres in the ground, so we are already ahead of 2009 planting. We finished last year on April 30th which puts us about 2190 acres behind 2010. There’s still a long growing season ahead that will ultimately determine yields, but although we finished quickly and early last year summer heat and drought curbed yields right at the end of the season.
Below you can see we’re about to fill the planter for the first time this year.
First seed box of the year filled with corn! (Yeah, it’s green. It’s the seed treatment.)
