Drowning in #BSLabels

Remember when I put up my post about peanut butter labels?  Well I kinda started something with that post. First it was the highest traffic day on the site I’d ever had, and that post became my most viewed post of all time within a matter of hours.  Then a group of us “agvocates” got together online and decided to roll out a bunch of posts today tagged with #BSLables on twitter.  You can probably guess what the BS stands for.  Once we all post we’ll each come back and list all the posts for you to see on our respective blogs.

We’re hoping to make this a trending topic on twitter.  Also, we aren’t out to go after any certain company, we are just keeping our eyes peeled at the grocery for labels that seem unnecessary or misleading.  Personally, I think there’s a lot of labels out there that are just capitalizing on the bad press of one ingredient or another, etc.  That being said I will say I had to do some looking at the store to find some labels worth posting, so I’d say the food industry is doing a pretty good job of not misleading us.  I’m sure there’s more out there though, and I’ll be looking!  If you’re concerned about what you’re eating, flip that package over and see what’s really in there!

The labels I found this time are more on the humorous side and this first group is more self defeating than anything else.  All this bottled water from different brands is purified.  All that nasty stuff that was in it before is gone (whatever it was).  But wait, right below the proclamation of purification they’ve all gone and put stuff back in the water!  It’s pure, but we’ve put some stuff that’s not water in it too!

Maybe it’s because I grew up on a farm, but hose water straight out of the well is the best kind of water!  And it probably has all kinds of tasty minerals in it already.

Then there’s this one.  40% more than what?  I couldn’t find anything that could tell me.  The same brand has another similar product right next to it, but that would’ve made this one almost 100% more in comparison.  ??

  1. Looking forward to more about this… i often think the same thing, but you are able to put it into perfect wording. It really is amazing how “off” the food industry can be with their labeling decisions. More yet, it makes you wonder how the person thought of this too, and the fact that we drive on our highways with that same person…

  2. Hilarious. I always like when I buy rice and the box front shows rice on a plate and the words, “serving suggestion”. Duh.

    Hope all is well…

    1. When I see the brands of popcorn we contract acres for sold at the grocery it’s kinda funny to see it marketed as whole grain now. Seems all the brands are doing this now.
