Farm Week in Pictures 01/06/2013

Another busy week!

First off, Purude beat Illinois and I was there.  Terone Johnson is about to put us up by 10 points with this free throw.

I climbed inside some grains bins to check on corn this week. I thought I had all my pockets cleaned out until I got home and changed pants. Whoops.

Getting some more painting done on the 4630 while the hitch is apart.

Six loads of corn were hauled to the ethanol plant this week. The plant near here will soon have corn oil extraction in place meaning it will produce ethanol, livestock feed, AND corn oil.

We used our 7920 to power the unloading auger this time. We often use our antique M or JD 70 to run the auger. The bucket is raised because the auger sticks out over a lane when loading from this bin so the trucks have to pull up right next to the front of the tractor to stay out of the field.

Corn dust or “bee’s wings” fill up my tracks and bird tracks in the snow.

Last but not least, someone had their 3rd birthday party on Saturday!

  1. In response to ( ethanol, livestock feed, AND corn oil.) As you know I believe We don’t need to,and shouldn’t use good land to grow fuel. the US has plenty of oil and gas and there are plenty of better options, like- http://www.airfuelsynthesis.com/ http://www.nei.org/ http://www.terrapower.com http://www.proterro.com/ But the RFS mandates stifle better options by forcing us to use billions of gallons corn and other land source energy.
The highly respected OECD said. “The rush to energy crops threatens to cause food shortages and damage to biodiversity with limited benefits … Government policies supporting and protecting domestic production of biofuels are inefficient [and] not cost effective … The current push to expand the use of biofuels is creating unsustainable tensions that will disrupt markets without generating significant environmental benefits … Governments should cease creating new mandates for biofuels and investigate ways to phase them out.” Richard Doornbosch and Ronald Steenblik, “Biofuels: Is the Cure Worse Than the Disease?,” in Round Table on Sustainable Development (OECD, Sep 11-12, 2007).
To stop the mandate farmers need to stop selling crops for fuel and everyone needs to sign the pledge at http://smarterfuelfuture.org/ .

    1. Thanks! There was quite a build up to the Thomas party. And he scored a new John Deere blanket. I can’t explain how important John Deere blankets are to this kid!

      1. Hi Brian – I can’t believe they have kid size John Deere blankets. My aunt said one of her boys – as a baby – always got hyper excited the moment he heard a tractor. Could be genetic?

  2. I just noticed – you have my floor. Whatever area you dropped the corn out of your pockets in has the same flooring as my kitchen. :-)

  3. We were sitting at least on the same sides at the ball game! I was in the upper bowl right behind the Illini bench. Had to leave at halftime since I had a job interview the next day.
