Old School

Here I am summer of 2009 on our 1956 John Deere 70 diesel pulling a 3 bottom plow.  We took the plow out into a wheat field after harvest for fun and to shine the plow up a little bit.  I was born in 1980 and this was the first and still only time I have ever plowed anything.  I’m still not clear on how to properly open a field.  I can remember riding with Dad or Grandpa when I was little, but I never operated the plow.

My dad says it’s different for my generation learning to farm because he saw the evolution of tractors and equipment from what’s pictured through to the present.  I started out with everything big and it keeps getting bigger.  I wonder sometimes about my one year old.  By the time he’s old enough to be alone in the cab we might not even need an operator.  I hope not, because isn’t everyone’s favorite part of the year actually getting out in the field?
