I’m Mostly Finished Farming Naked

Being naked in a dirty, dusty, greasy environment isn’t the best situation.  All that stuff finds its way into all your little cracks and crevices and just makes a general mess of things.  So even though I prefer the look and feel of being fully nude I decided it was time to cover up.

OtterBox Defender

The case is actually two pieces. The tablet and cover snap into this hard plastic casing that also serves as a multi angle stand that I’m actually using a lot. At first I thought I might do without this part.

That’s why I just bought and installed and OtterBox Defender Series case for my iPad.  Whenever we are doing field work I have my iPad secured in a suction cup mount in the tractor or combine window.  It’s how I stay connected to all of you via this blog, Facebook, twitter, YouTube, and Google+.  I also keep up on news, look up answers to ag questions I think of, and listen to internet radio.  My John Deere Mobile Farm Manager app is always at hand too!  The cab of a tractor although air-conditioned and filtered is a pretty dusty place.  Kind of a hard thing to avoid when you work the dirt for a living.  So I figured I’d break down and protect my iPad from all that particulate matter.

I’ve only had the case for about a week and I have yet to remove the thing.  It does add some bulk to the tablet, but so far I don’t mind.  I haven’t actually tried it out in the field yet because field work is done for now.  I should be able to test it for a couple of days when wheat harvest rolls around in a few weeks.  I hope the extra weight doesn’t affect my mount’s outstanding stability thus far.  I don’t think it will, but I might have to do some home tests low to the floor before I literally field test the whole setup.

iPad

Here is my iPad in the case using the hard outer shell as a stand. The stand has two angles, this being the steep one. The shallow setting is good for typing. Looks like a cool blog I have up on the screen!

Although my nude iPad was thinner and lighter than the armored version I really enjoy the silicone backing on the case.  I was always worried about dropping my tablet because iPads are kinda slippery.  The silicone has a very grippy surface, and I no longer worry about it slipping as I climb in and out of tall farm equipment.  A screen protector is built into the body of the case.  The inside is lined with shock absorbing material for even more safety.  Every button on the device works just as well as they did unclothed.  The camera is unobstructed, and the charging port is very well protected with an easy to open and shut flap than snaps into place securely.

My phone will still remain in its birthday suit.  I like to travel light, and I don’t want a holster to get in my way so my phone stays in my front pocket.  A case of any kind for my phone just seems like too much bulk for me.

Three years of smartphones now and the only real damage I’ve experienced is killing a phone that I knocked off the kitchen counter causing it to hit the hard floor face first with no bounce.  If I go someplace really dirty like the inside of a grain bin I try to leave my phone in a truck or in the shop.

OtterBox Defender Series

Even the Apple logo is protected with a clear material. The speaker isn’t totally covered, but the sound would be muffled if it were.

Rest assured that I farm fully clothed.  Only my gadgets will be naked.  Except my iPad.  I got mine from Amazon for about $70 which is a bit less than you can get direct from OtterBox.

What’s your preference?  Naked or suited up?

  1. we have the otterbox case for my son’s ipad. He is autistic and likes to drop it and is rough on everything. The case is amazing, no scratches at all.

  2. Left my iPhone out in the rain one night. Providor said it was ruined. Bought a new one with a 48hr grace period, put old one in a bag of rice and 24 hours later it came to life! Works better and the battery stays charged longer than before the soaking. However, Don’t recommend you do this to improve phone performance.
