Farm Week in Pictures 12/07/2013

Farm Week in Pictures enters December!  Temps on the farm went from 60 to below 20 this week.  We finished up some field work and that tile project before the weather got nasty.  I went over to Illinois on Friday for something I’m very interested in, and we did a little decorating too.  To the pictures!

Farmers in Flight

DJI Phantom with GoPro via thefarmerslife.comI traveled to Bloomington, IL this week to spend a day learning the basics of UAVs in ag.  This is a DJI Phantom equipped with a GoPro camera.  I’ve already ordered my Phantom 2, and you know there will be a lot more info on the topic of flying over our fields coming to this blog in the near future.  Stay tuned for that!

It’s a Dirty Job, Then Someone has to Clean it

John Deere 2630 VT via thefarmerslife.comI ran our 9320 to pull the 2623 VT through the last field we needed to till.  The happens to be the field we just bought.

Muddy via thefarmerslife.comYep.  It got pretty filthy.

John Deere 2630 VT via thefarmerslife.comAlmost three hours of pressure washing later it’s clean.  Clean enough anyway.

Combine Head Cleaning via thefarmerslife.comThe flex draper was cleaned out as well and then put away until wheat harvest next summer.

Going Deep

Trenching via thefarmerslife.comThe final run of our drainage project that began in the fall of 2012 is finally done!  Last fall the main line and some of the laterals were put down, and this fall we put in another 11 miles of laterals!

Broken Drain Tile via thefarmerslife.comA reddish orange piece of clay is a tell tale sign you have a broken tile line.  New lines are plastic, but older installs consist of clay pipes laid down in a line.  A line coming from a neighboring field running to the county main under our field was cut a few times during the installation of our new system.  We can’t let our neighbor get flooded because of something we’ve done, so this must be fixed.

Broken Drain Tile via thefarmerslife.comAfter the line was located with a steel probe we dug it out.  This is 6″ diameter so we slipped some 5″ tile into this area to take the place of the broken section.  Then we hooked the neighbor’s line up to our new system so he is flowing properly again.

Drain tile via thefarmerslife.comI bet not everyone knows there are miles upon miles of man made waterways under the soil!

Bean There, Done That

Loading Soybeans via thefarmerslife.comOne load of soybeans was loaded and delivered to town this week.  We contracted four loads to be sold a week or two ago, and now we are delivering the goods!

Almost Christmas!

Christmas Star via thefarmerslife.comThe old Christmas star needed some new bulbs before it made the annual trip to the top of the grain leg.
