In our area once you get North of US 24 soils start to get sandy. The terrain gets a little hilly in places, and the sandiest areas are often the highest. This year we didn’t perform any tillage on our sandiest fields, and judging by what I saw yesterday that was a good idea.
It’s been unusually dry this spring. The sand hills are dry in a normal year. All the fields around me yesterday with high areas of sand that had been tilled experienced some serious wind erosion. I even found a spot where sand was drifting like snow on the road. The most surprising thing is that none of this ground with blowing sand was being worked yesterday. Just about everywhere I looked yesterday there was a continuous cloud of sand moving across the land. At one particularly windy part of the day I was outside the tractor and could feel sand hitting my face.
