Corn Conversation

During this “interesting” growing season I’ve been talking about corn with Cathryn Wojcicki aka @CornyCate from National Corn Growers Association.  She works on a series of podcasts with various farmers around the nation to get a feel for how the corn crop is progressing.  I get a call from Cathryn every couple of weeks to talk about my farm in particular.  We spend about five minutes talking corn conditions and then she posts our conversation online in Field Notes.  Take a few minutes to listen the latest podcast from our talk this morning!

  1. NGCA has been proposing ACRE and similar revenue insurance, and had a piece developing de-coupled Direct Payments (Iowa Farm Bill Committee of 1990s). Most farmers rejected ACRE, especially here in Iowa. I was among the critics in the farm press. Do you have blogs on discussions with @CornyCate on these topics?

    1. I’ve been talking with her again recently on her Field Notes series. She follows a few farmers around the country and gets crop updates from them throughout the year. We went to a presentation about ACRE a few years at our FSA office. We didn’t sign up. It seems massively complication, and sitting through three hours of bureaucratic jargon didn’t help. Direct payments can go as far as I concerned. I’ve yet to think of a way I could defend them to the average non-farm taxpayer.
